Holiday Season & FaithPosted by: Helen Breña on 11.30.15 at 12:00:00 am
As I begin to look towards Christmas, I think about faith and how it can bring us together.
I grew up in a Catholic household and went to Catholic kindergarten and high school. However, my ancestral roots are Vikings and Inkas, who practiced paganism. Christians have Ten Commandments. The Inkas had three: Don't Steal, Don't Lie, and Don't be Lazy. I remember learning these when visiting our ancestral homeland of Cusco, Peru. My sister and I laughed at the last one, “Ahhhh... that explains why Dad never let us spend the day sitting on the couch watching TV!”
Whatever the faith, in its truest form, it teaches us to be kind and respectful of others. That is what I hope we all remember throughout this holiday season and all holiday season of all faiths in the coming year: Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, Sufism, Hinduism, Wicca, Atheism to name just a few. Let us respect our faiths, others' faiths, and focus on the teachings that bring us together.
