Duke University girls' basketball coach, Joanne P. McCallie, is the most successful Maine-grown basketball coach ever. Her Duke team was a second-seed in the women's NCAA tournament. McCallie attributes much of this success to an increase of time spent in the weight room. McCallie states: "We obviously want to be quicker and faster, and you do that by getting stronger and having the ability to go longer, endurance-wise. All things get better, and the weight room provides that. The weight room's not about bulking up and getting big - that's sort of an old view of a weight room. A weight room is so that you can be sleek and quick and athletic and tough and focused." This applies not only to top athletes, but also to everyday people of all ages who want to feel younger, function easily in everyday activities, and be healthy.
