Yoga is not just for the young and ultralimber. Millions of Americans now practice yoga, and the habit is catching on with older adults who want to improve their strength, flexibility, and concentration. New research supports the benefits of yoga for older adults who may have weak leg or balance problems. This research found that even standing or chair yoga can greatly increase lower body flexibility, leg strength, and balance, and reduce spine curvature for participants with excessively rounded backs. Chair yoga utilizes traditional floor poses modified for sitting in a chair, and is an easy alternative for those who are unable or do not feel comfortable doing floor yoga.
