YMCA of Southern Maine

For a Better Us.™

Arts & Humanities

All kids have great potential. At the Y, we work every day to help children and teens build skills and confidence as they explore new interests and passions through the Y.

Throughout the year we offer many classes for children including:

Early Learning Readiness

Play Together Learn Together: Come play with us! The Y is now offering an Early Learning Readiness Program. For many families, informal family, friend, and neighbor caregivers are the most common source of child care for young children. The Early Learning Readiness Program provides a stimulating, preschool-like experience for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers, through learning centers that foster development and improve school readiness for the children, while supporting the skills and confidence of their caregivers. This program is free and all are welcome.

Art Club (5-9 & 9+)

Join Art Club and get your creativity on! Artists will work on solo projects, large group installations, and learn about famous artists and techniques. Led by experienced staff, this club is a great way to explore visual art in all forms.

Kid's Art Studio

A great class for the budding Picasso or Monet! Young artists will have fun learning art studio techniques like drawing, painting and pastels. Each class will include some fun seasonal crafts, too! The studio is open for two hours so students can come at a convenient time and stay for as long as they need to complete projects in between swim and other classes.

Y Kid's Theater Club

Introducing theater to kids, Y Kid's Theater Club will give kids a chance to express their creativity! Students will create their own production each session. Working with the YMCA theater instructor, kids will hone their on-stage and off-stage skills.

Junior Picassos

For the independent Picasso, this art class focuses on the basic art techniques encouraging creativity through mediums. Young artists will enjoy getting a little messy with lots of fun projects.

Tone Down for What!

Has your child always adored the spotlight on the kitchen table? Loved singing along to Glee and Pitch Perfect? Ever wanted to learn about singing? Join us in this a capella performance workshop! During this seven week class, students will learn the basics of acapella singing, stage performance, melody, harmony and will finish the session with a small performance! Singers are encouraged to be able to read music, but not required. Ages 12-17.
