Outdoor Classes: What to Expect

Please read through the following so you can arrive to class prepared. We can't wait to see you! To view the outdoor class schedule, click here.

Class Size

Limited to 9 members, plus instructor, per guidelines.

Membership Required

Outdoor group exercise classes are limited to current, active members of the YMCA of Southern Maine. Advance registration is required to participate. Sign up here!

Class Time

Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to class start time to allow for check in and screening questions. For safety reasons, members arriving less than 5 minutes before class will not be able to join us for that class.

Classes are weather dependent. Temperature, heavy rain, lightning, etc. may mean we need to cancel class. We will communicate weather cancellations via Remind, our text alert system.

Please sign up for alerts at the branch you visit most often. We understand members may travel to different branches to take outdoor classes. If a class is canceled or moved, we will alert all members signed up for our wellness alerts – you do not need to sign up for each branch’s alerts.

At this time, we will not be able to offer Prime Time for our outdoor classes. These classes are intended for adults only. Please do not bring your children under age 15.

Before you Leave Home

Register for the class. Registration is limited to nine participants and closes 90 minutes before start time. All participants must be active YMCA of Southern Maine members and must register in advance to save their spot. Register online here.

BYOE – Bring Your Own Equipment

Please bring any equipment you will need, including yoga mats. To ensure safety, the Y will not provide equipment at this time.

See the class description for any recommended equipment. Modifications will be offered to allow for an equipment-free class.

Use of facilities: the branch will not be open for members at this time, per the Governor’s mandate. This means you will not have access to the bathroom or locker room. Before you leave home, remember to use the facilities.

Bring, and wear, a mask through the entire screening and check in process. You will not be allowed to participate without.

Bring a water bottle with water. No vending machines or fountains will be available.

Sunscreen, bug spray, a hat – please bring whatever you would normally use for safety and comfort outside.

When You Arrive

Please wear your mask and observe at least 6’ social distancing during the check in process.

One by one, your instructor will call you forward.

Let your instructor know your name. It will be checked against our class roster. (Group size is limited. To save your spot, you must register for each class in advance. To do so, visit us online.)

Your instructor will ask you a series of screening questions about possible COVID-like symptoms and will then take your temperature using a contactless thermometer.*

Please answer these questions honestly.

This screening is intended to keep everyone in the class safe and healthy.

Members who refuse this screening will not be allowed to participate in class.

Once you are cleared, your instructor will assign you a designated class space.

This will be your personal space during class.

Please stay in your designated space for the duration of the class.

*YMCA staff will also be screening using the same procedure.

During Class

Please stay in your designated space for the duration of the class.

When walking to/from your designated space, please observe social distancing and wear your mask.

Once class begins, you may remove your mask.

When class is over, please put your mask back on before you exit the class.

Self Screening

For the health and wellbeing of our members, staff and community, before you come to the Y, please ask yourself the following:

Has anyone you’ve come into contact with been recently exposed to someone with a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19?

Have you or a member of your household experienced or come into contact with anyone with the following known symptoms?

Fever of ≥100.4°F or chills

Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Muscle or body aches

New loss of taste or smell

Sore throat

Congestion or runny nose

Nausea or vomiting

Do you or anyone in your household have any of these symptoms?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, please follow CDC guidelines and stay home.

If you answer no to all questions, we look forward to seeing you at the Y!
