Summer Care

Quality, affordable summer child care right in your community.

At the Y, kids have fun while building confidence, self-esteem, and positive relationships.

We are excited to offer child care for families in our community this summer so that parents and caregivers can return to work and school, and so children are supported to continue learning and growing.

While the pandemic cannot change the core of who we are and what we can achieve as a community and a Y, it will mean significant changes to our programs. Please understand that this summer will be different than in years past. Because of this, we are calling our summer programs Summer Care, rather than Summer Camp.

While we will be taking significant safety measure at Summer Care in order to protect children and staff, our goal is to make this summer as fun and enjoyable as possible through outdoor play, creative games, arts and crafts, nature exploration, small group events, and more.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, and based on CDC recommendations, the following activities will not be a part of programming this summer: swimming, field trips, archery, climbing wall and ropes courses (older children), or hosting visitors.

We will be following federal and state safety guidelines, and we ask that parents, families, children, and staff follow these as well.

Limited Enrollment & Enhanced Cleaning

Our Summer Care program for school-aged children (ages 5-12) will be considerably smaller than camp in years past to ensure we’re able to support our staff and the children in our care as we maintain the following new protocols. This means spots will fill fast.

We are adding additional staff to support an enhanced cleaning schedule.

Summer Care will be offered at all four branches: Northern York County (Biddeford), Greater Portland, Casco Bay (Freeport), and Pineland (New Gloucester), as well as at Otter Pond in Standish.

Summer Care is for children ages 5-12.

We are also offering care for children ages 1-5 at our Northern York County branch in Biddeford and for children ages 3-5 at our Casco Bay branch in Freeport. For these ages, learn more by clicking on the links!

We will not offer our Leader in Training (LIT) program for 13-16-year-olds this year.

Summer Care hours are: Monday-Friday from 9:30am – 3:30pm, June 29 through August 28 (Summer Care in Portland and Biddeford will run through September 4).

We understand that many parents need a safe, enriching place for their children outside of regular care hours. Extended care is provided at no additional charge each day from 8:00 - 9:30am and 3:30 - 5:00pm.

Otter Pond

No Busses - Unfortunately, because of the need to support social distancing, we will NOT offer bussing to and from Otter Pond this summer. All children must be brought to, and picked up from, Otter Pond by their guardian or a person appointed by the family.

Severe Weather - In the case of severe weather, such as thunder and lightning, families will need to pick up their children from Otter Pond early. If the weather turns bad while we are at Otter Pond, children will be kept safe in our bath house until they are picked up.

We want to best serve your child and to make his or her Summer Care experience enjoyable. Communication is a key component of this and critical to a successful relationship. Therefore, if your child has any behavioral or medical challenges (including allergies), please speak with the Team Lead at your location to determine if we can safely accommodate your child’s needs.

At the Y, we believe all kids should have the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve through programs like Summer Care. That’s why we are committed to serving everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Financial assistance is available, using a sliding scale based on household income. No one is turned away, so please ask! We also accept Aspire and other State subsidies and vouchers. For Financial Assistance and State Subsidy/Voucher information, please click here

It is only through the generous support of individuals, businesses, and organizations in our community that we are able to provide this need-based financial assistance. Because of their generosity, the YMCA of Southern Maine provided more than $1.1 million in financial assistance and program support to children last year, giving more children access to youth development programs that nurture their potential.
