At the YMCA of Southern Maine, we know we are the strongest when everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive at the Y. Our mission statement (above) calls us to serve all people in our community. We have recently updated our membership policy to ensure we are fulfilling our mission and meeting the diverse needs of our membership. Below is a brief summary of the changes:
Family: Family structures in our communities are evolving and the definition of “household” is changing as a result. The Y is committed to supporting all types of families. We’ve changed our definition of household to include grandparents, caretakers, foster children, siblings, friends, partners, etc. Our family membership definition now includes all adults and dependent children in a household living at the same address.
Privacy: We hear about the importance of privacy from many different people, for many different reasons: members recovering from surgery or cancer treatment, members who are obese, underweight or modest, members with certain cultural or religious beliefs etc. In order to meet the privacy needs of all members, we are making sure that there are private showering spaces and at least two private changing spaces in each locker room. There will also be private locker room options within each of our facilities that any member can use.
Gender: Our society is learning more and more about the complexity of gender. Our membership policy now clarifies that gender is self-identified. The Y community will honor a member’s gender identification and will ensure program, service and facility access is available based on that identification.
Our updated membership policy is listed below. We hope these changes better serve the diverse needs of our members and better reflect our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. We value our members’ personal beliefs and respect the right to those beliefs.
If you have any questions, concerns or thoughts about the changes listed above, you can reach me at hbrena@ymcaofsouthermaine.org or 207-874-1111.

Membership Policy - Updated July 1, 2014
Building an inclusive, healthy community for all, regardless of ability to pay.
The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children of all ages and from all walks of life joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundations of community.
Youth Development: Nurturing the potential of every child and teen
We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the Y, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
Healthy Living: Improving the nation’s health and well-being
In communities across the nation, the Y is a leading voice on health and well-being. With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, millions of youth, adults, and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind, and body.
Social Responsibility: Giving back and providing support to our neighbors
The Y has been listening and responding to our communities’ most critical social needs for 170 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve. Through the Y, thousands of volunteers, donors, leaders, and partners across the country are empowering millions of people in the U.S. and around the world to be healthy, confident, connected, and secure.
Our core values unite us as a movement with a common cause. They are the shared beliefs and essential principles that guide our behavior, interactions with each other and decision-making.
The four values of the Y:
Caring: Show a sincere concern for others
Honesty: Be truthful in what you say and do
Respect: Follow the golden rule
Responsibility: Be accountable for your promises and actions
It is the policy of the YMCA to make membership available to all persons regardless of race, color, religion, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability, or financial circumstances without discrimination.
